About Fengersfors

Fengersfors is a former industrial village. Since the 1700s, iron, pulp, and paper were produced here. The factory closed down in 1978.
Since 2002, the old industrial site has been home to a vibrant cultural centre – an artist collective called Not Quite.
Artists and craftspeople of all kinds have their studios and workshops here.
There is a gallery, a shop, a stone-oven bakery, as well as a café and bistro on site – definitely worth a visit.

The bathing area by Knarrbysjön offers both a sandy beach and grassy areas, a dock with a ladder, and further out in the lake there’s a floating platform with a diving tower.

In Fengersfors, you’ll also find a charming little country store:
Fengersfors Fröskogs Lanthandel, Fabriksvägen 3.
This is a classic rural shop offering a wide range of groceries, household items, tobacco, and fuel (gasoline).

Opening hours:
Mon–Wed: 10:30–18:00
Thu–Fri: 10:00–19:00
Sat–Sun: 11:00–14:00

For a larger selection, there’s a COOP supermarket in Dals Långed, about 15 km away.

About the House

A previous owner of the house was a true jack-of-all-trades, and you can still see traces of his creativity in the garden – such as concrete animals and a windmill. The archway above the entrance was made from an old harrow and wheel bearings from VW Beetles.

Board games and puzzles can be found in one of the upstairs wardrobes – the one around the corner where there’s a bed.
The daybed in the red room upstairs can be pulled out into a double bed. Extra pillows and blankets are stored in the drawers underneath.

A charcoal grill is available in the metal shed in the garden.

There are currants and raspberries in the garden – feel free to pick them if they are ripe during your stay.

The cleaning cupboard is in the second hallway, next to the stairs to the upper floor.

Things to be aware of:

  • The electricity in the kitchen can become overloaded if several appliances are used at the same time. It’s best not to run the microwave, kettle, and stove simultaneously.
  • Please close the door to the second hallway (where the stairs go up) before opening the oven – otherwise, the smoke detector might be triggered.

For this reason, charging electric cars in any outlet in the house is not allowed, as it could overload the system.

The kitchen tiles are painted. Please use only a soft cloth or the soft side of a kitchen sponge when cleaning them – do not use scouring agents or the rough side of the sponge.

Wi-Fi login information is provided on a separate note in the kitchen.

Waste sorting – please separate:

  • Paper & cardboard
  • Plastic
  • Newspapers/paper
  • Glass
  • Metal
  • Other waste

A recycling station for sorted waste is located near the local shop.
Other (mixed) waste can be thrown in the bin by the gate.

Smoking is strictly forbidden inside the house.

Right of Public Access (“Allemansrätten”)

Sweden has the Right of Public Access (Allemansrätten), which allows everyone to enjoy nature – to hike, cycle, paddle, and pick berries or mushrooms – even on private land, as long as you show respect.

The golden rule is simple:
“Don’t disturb – don’t destroy.”

  • Respect privacy: Do not walk through private yards or cultivated land. Avoid camping near houses.
  • Camping: One night is usually allowed, but not close to homes or on farmland. Rules may vary in national parks and nature reserves – check beforehand.
  • Fires: Only make fires where it is safe – preferably in designated fire pits.
Never use live trees for firewood. Always check if fire bans are in place.
  • Litter: Take all your rubbish with you. Leave no trace.
  • Nature and wildlife: Do not damage trees or shrubs.
Don’t disturb animals. Dogs must be leashed in nature, especially from March 1 to August 20.

By showing respect, we all help protect this unique right for future generations.

Food and Drink

Take the opportunity to try the Swedish tradition of “Fika” – a social coffee (or tea) break with something sweet.
It’s an important part of Swedish culture and a great way to relax.
Dalsland offers local flavours, often based on ingredients from forests and lakes. Look for dishes with fish, game, mushrooms, and berries, depending on the season.
